I was featured in the article “How to Fix the Broken Rung” in FORBES, written by Shelley Zalis, CEO and Founder of The Female Quotient, providing advice to young professionals looking to get their first promotion into management.
When I was preparing for the interview, I realized that I had a lot to say on this topic. I realized my passion was because of how often in my career I had to take the bull by the horns in order to reach my goals and learn how to do it the hard way. I felt the gravity as I climbed all of those hills, not just as a woman, but as a professional that faced another obstacle related to feeling like the “other”. As a white women – which comes with privileges – I knew I looked different than my peers, having been born with a cleft lip and palate. Because of this I struggled with my own self-confidence, especially early in my career.
While this article is focused on women in general, I know that the plight is even harder for those in marginalized communities and look forward to addressing those in future articles, publications and conversations.
What is one step you will take in January, 2020 to get that next promotion?
“When asking for a promotion, put together a business case for it — quantify what you’ve done and the impact you’ve had.”
